Disc Golf Bag Buyer's Guide

Whether you're a casual player or a more serious disc golfer who wishes to improve his kit, there is something for everyone.
One thing to bear in mind when making your decision is storage. For long days on the course, you will want to make sure you can carry everything you will need.

Having features like a water bottle holder or a hand towel holder are a nice touch, and will make life a little more comfortable out of the course.

Comfort is a must, as you will be carrying around your bag to each course. An uncomfortable bag can have lasting effects on posture.

The durability of a bag is very important, as it will be carrying everything you will need out on the course. If you are going to use tournament regulation sets, then the discs are weighted and therefore put more strain on the bag and its straps. Also, if you are a regular player, you will want a bag that has long term usage in it, and will not fall apart after only a few months.
Water-resistance is a helpful attribute to have on a bag, as weather conditions can vary. Also, if you are playing early in the morning, you have dew to contend with. If water is allowed to seep into your bag, then its contents can get wet or damaged, as well as compromising the stitching and zips.

If you want to look good out on the course, it may be a good idea to take note of the different styles of bags and variations of color. They say "The suit, maketh the man," and when it comes to disc golf "The Bag, maketh the golfer!"

Type

All disc golf bags can be broadly grouped into two categories: Tote bags and Backpacks. Although there are several design variations, more or less each of them falls in the above two categories. For example, there are ranger bags and sling bags, which again fall in the backpack category.

Tote bags: These entry-level bags sit at the bottom of the price spectrum and are ideal for beginners or anyone just starting out. It's designed to be worn on the shoulders and come with either one or two straps. The bag comes with 8 to 15 discs holding capacity, a couple of putter discs, and a small accessory pocket to store essential items like scorecard, mobile phone, or wallet. Overall, they're quite compact, lightweight, and value for money. However, the downside to them is that it can be quite uncomfortable to carry it on longer courses, and every time you need to take out the disk, you need to put the bag down.

Backpacks: These are the preferred bags by most pro players and are ideal for all skill levels. The reason for the widespread popularity of backpack disc golf bags is the ease and comfort of use. As the weight is evenly distributed on your two shoulders and back, they don't feel heavy. At the same time, it allows accessing the discs easily and conveniently. Some of the backpacks even come with a top putter disc compartment to grab putt discs directly without taking the bag down.

The bags come with ample storage space. In some of the models, you can store up to 30 discs. Additionally, there are separate pockets to store your rain gear, valuables, water bottles, and more. You would not be short on space with one of these for sure. Also, the backpacks are much more sturdily built and offer better protection to your gears in comparison to the tote bags.

If I have to put my money, I will definitely opt for backpacks, not just because of the feature but also because the price difference isn't substantial enough.

Skill Level & Budget

As you progress as a player, you'll be using a lot more different types of specialized discs from drivers to fairways. So obviously, you want to take into account future growth as well. You don't want to be in a situation where you're stuck with a bag with limited storage capacity or something which isn't convenient to use.

Here is a breakdown of what type of bag and budget you should be spending based on your current skill level:

Beginners: If you're new to disc golf, just get a cheap and functional bag to begin with. A tote bag with 8 to 10 disc holding capacity, under $20 range should work out perfectly. There is no point going for anything remotely expensive for two reasons. Firstly you don't know yet, whether you will be playing disc golf seriously or not and secondly, as you develop as a player, you would know what sort of features you would need in a bag.

Serious Beginner to intermediate: If you have been playing disc golf for some time, you should opt for a decent quality bag with adequate disc storage capacity. You should look for a backpack style bag with at least 20 disc storage capacity, putter storage compartment, and accessory pockets. It makes sense to extend your budget a bit and get a better quality bag to accommodate your future growth as a player. You can get a bag fulfilling the above criteria well under $100.

Pro level: If you fall into this category, you already know what type of bag you should be looking for. As you have already developed a preference and know more or less how many discs you carry, the decision would be easy, but such a bag wouldn't be cheap either. A pro-quality bag would easily run you over $200, but the pricing is well-justified, considering you wouldn't need to buy another bag for a long time.

Features to Look for

1) Storage Capacity: Start by finalizing the number of discs you carry or plan to carry. You can get a bag with storage capacity as low as 8 to as high as 30. It goes without saying, the higher the holding capacity, the heavier the bag will be, and a lower capacity bag will be more portable. If you plan to carry more than 20 discs, stick with a backpack as it will be more convenient to carry. Most players tend to carry 18 to 24 discs and 2 to 3 putter discs.

2) Dividers: Bags come with either dedicated slots to keep each disc in place or one single big compartment where you can put all the discs together. In bags without the dividers, the disc often shift from their position as you travel, and it can become quite messy taking out a particular disc. Moreover, the discs often rub against each other and may very well damage the disc. The issue is more prominent when the bag is not completely jam-packed with discs, and there are empty spaces in the compartment. On the other hand, in bags with dividers, the discs remain in place at all times, and it's easier to access the discs.

3) Pockets: You don't just need space for discs, but you also need space to store other items like water bottle, scorecard, clothing, wallet, phone, and other stuff. In the mid-range bags, you get two to three pockets while the higher end ones come with up to eight pockets. Most bags come with a separate compartment for putter discs either on the side or on the top.

Zippered pockets are much sturdier and work better than the Velcro. However, a couple of easy access Velcro pockets won't hurt. Some newer bags even come with an insulated cooler compartment to store your beverages and drinks. If you play on longer courses, look for bags with at least two bottle storage pockets.

4) Material: The durability of the bag depends a lot on the material used for construction. Nylon, Polyester, and leather are the most commonly used fabric material. Nylon is the preferred material choice for a number of reasons. It's robust, sturdy, waterproof, and does not wear out easily. Polyester is found in the cheaper variants, while leather is used in top-end models. Leather bags are quite uncommon and are costlier. Overall, you can't really go wrong with Nylon.

5) Weight: The weight of the bag is equally important. After all, you're going to carry it on your shoulder throughout the game. While a backpack does evenly distribute the weight but it still can become nagging after a point. A fully loaded bag with 18 discs and other essential items easily weigh over 15 lbs, which clearly isn't light enough to be carried for hours and hours. To limit the weight, you should choose a lighter bag as well as carry only the essential discs and items. There is no point carrying discs that you don't use.

6) Other: Some bags come with an in-built rain fly feature, while in most bags, you need to buy it separately. The higher-end bags are compatible carts, while some may come along with the cart. The cart makes it easy to carry your set up across the course without putting any strain on your shoulders or breaking your back. Keep in mind, such bags easily run over $200+ price range.

Let's Wrap Things Up:

A Disc golf bag isn't something that you'll buy very often or change, but it sure is a quintessential accessory for any disc golfer. So, it's crucial to pick the right one (preferably in your first go).

I sincerely hope you found this disc golf bag buyer's guide helpful and found a bag to your liking.

Don't forget to pack a scorecard and a pen, ensure your discs are good conditions, stay hydrated, and most importantly, have fun with your friends and family!
